How often do you zoom in on song lyrics you enjoy listening to? I always do! My boyfriend and I send each other songs that land on our hearts and minds. The words express our feelings in ways we may be short of saying. We think about the musician and what prompted him/her to put pen to paper: the feelings, experiences, and dreams which create powerful messages and stories.
Why not use music lyrics to hook a reader to closely read the message that is being said coupled by music?
In my close reading workshops to teachers, I incorporate songs for teachers to annotate and make connections. For example, Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin or The Times They are A-Changin’ by Bob Dylan. I couple the close read with Depths of Knowledge (DOK) questions to engage the reader in deeper thinking and understanding of the text.
Middle and High School students enjoy listening to music on their iPhones and iPods. Using their favorite artists as a hook to close reading can be very engaging, meaningful and fun! Give it a go… I am sure they will love it and learn more about what they are reading!
