Constructing scientific explanations is an NGSS Science and Engineering Practice essential to optimizing students’ conceptual understanding of science and engineering.  This workshop will focus on facilitating this practice so that students can effectively make claims, support their claims with evidence, construct explanations and engage in argumentation   Educators attending this engaging and interactive workshop will:

  • conceptualize the CER (Claims, Evidence, Reasoning) Framework for scientific explanation
  • determine how to use variations of the CER approach for diverse learners
  • construct rubrics to assess students’ proficiency in this practice
  • incorporate the CER approach as a key element in classroom discourse
  • connect the CER in science to engineering, math and ELA
